Nanzan Grill restaurant

There is a barbeque restaurant in Kyoto where you can enjoy halal Wagyu beef.
The name of the restaurant is Nanzan Grill restaurant.

The brand of the catlle is “Kyo Tankuro Wagyu Catlle” which received halal certification from the mosque in Kyoto.
It is a well-established restaurant that has been in business for 44 years, and is still loved by local customers.
The restaurant completely stopped providing pork in order to become halal-friendly. All sauces were also remade by hand. They get visits from at least one group of Muslim customers every day.

This is a restaurant that you must visit once you come to Kyoto!

*What is Kyo Tankuro Wagyu catlle?
Kyo Tankuro Wagyu catlle is a Japanese breed of catlle “born and brought up in Kyoto” with shorthorn catlle as the mother and Kuroge-Wagyu (Japanese black catlle) as the father.
“Japanese shorthorn” is one of the four types of Wagyu catlles. They are healthy and strong catlles bred free range in steep mountains with deep taste. “Kuroge-Wagyu catlle” is a representative wagyu beef with fine marbling that melts in the mouth. Kyo Tankuro Wagyu with these Shorthorn catlle and Kuroge-Wagyu catlle as parents have both deep red meat taste and marbling that melts in the mouth.

Shoeian
Shoeian

When I first came in this country, I tried to keep myself safe from Pork meat and alcohol. I thought it would be a clever idea to eat much amount of bakery foods from the conception that bakery foods should not contain pork. Suddenly one of my Muslim friend told me that Japanese breads and different cakes contain Gelatin and Shortener (In Japanese language it is called ”Neu Kazai”) that are usually processed from pork elements. I was shocked and disappointed. Moreover I cannot read the Chinese Character “KANJI”. So I cannot select the bakery foods by reading the contents written over the cover before purchasing it. I have been feeling the necessity of a bakery on which we can keep faith and eat delicious bakery elements without any anxiety.
There are a few such bakery in Tokyo, but when I went to Kyoto, I found the only Halal certified bakery named “Shoeian”. Moving around in Kyoto, walking for long distances in a lot of large temples, I felt the need for carrying some dry bakery foods for eating in the street whenever I feel hungry. Because whenever I feel hungry, I cannot find halal food nearby my visiting place. “Shoeian” gave me some relief by providing their list of delicious products like “SHUO PAN”, “Matcha Sakura”, “Raison Butter Sando” etc. I enjoyed these Japanese bakery products with peace of mind and without any suspicion. I could never dare to enter such shops and try different items without any “Halal” certification. The foods were really very tasty.
One information I should mention here that “Shoeian” operates from 1000 am to 0600 pm only. One day I went to take some evening snacks and had to come back finding them closed. However, they have been preparing the foods just inside the counter from where I could see how they have been preparing the foods. All the people working there were Japanese and possibly none of them were muslims. I felt to be grateful to these Japanese people from the core of my heart because they had to learn about “Halal” food and it was never easy for them to do so. Their dedication to provide us the opportunity to eat halal bakery foods really demands encouragement. I also found some Japanese people also enjoying the foods. It reveals that, from the onset “Shoeian” could achieve the popularity and confidence not only of Muslim people, but also the Japanese people.

Written by Sk. Nishat Abdullah-san

I am Sk. Nishat Abdullah from Bangladesh. I am a Muslim came to Japan for getting higher training in medical science. Before coming to Japan, I had some idea that in a country where Muslim people are few in number, finding “Halal” food and drink may be a little difficult. But later I found it more difficult to get access to “Halal” food whenever I wanted them. There are two main reasons.
One, I am not good in Japanese Language, so neither I can communicate well with the shopkeepers, nor, I can read what is written on the cover of a food. Second reason is that most of the Japanese people does not know the meaning of “Halal”. Recently I have visited the traditional city of Japan, Kyoto where one can enjoy the real flavor of Japanese culture along with a good number of UNESCO natural heritage sites.

Getting down into Kyoto Station, when I went to “Kyoto Tourist Information Centre”, I wanted a list of available Halal restaurants in Kyoto. The list I received contained the name of five restaurants. Among them only one restaurant was found to receive the Halal certification. The name of the restaurant was “Rose Café”. Though I knew the name before from the website of “Halal Media Japan”, it created additional confidence in my mind about its authentication. So, the first lunch I took in Kyoto was in “Rose Café”. The interior was neat and clean, decorated in a Turkish manner. The people working inside the restaurant were enthusiastic and co operative.
The transportation system in Kyoto is a little different from Tokyo because, subway is not much widespread in Kyoto. So, most commonly used transport in Kyoto is bus. To reach Rose café, One has to take the Bus from Kyoto Station for “koujinguchi. The number of the bus in this route is 205.
Usually in Japanese restaurants, the lunch time is up to 1530. When I reached there, it was 1420 and I came to know that the time limit for lunch time in “Rose Café” is 1400. I would like to share this information with the readers so that they can be careful about this. However, I had to choose some menu from the dinner courses. They have a variety of Turkish dishes like “Tavuk Doner” which means Chicken kebab plate, “Kuru Fasulye” which contains steamed beef with kidney beans, “Sebzeli Tavuk” which contained stewed chicken with vegetables and so many. The food they served were delicious
After finishing my lunch, I asked about the location of saying prayer. I was overwhelmed at the hospitability by the people of Rose café when one of the staff accompanied me to show the “Kyoto Muslim Cultural Centre” where I could say my Juhr prayer. It was interesting that the “Kyoto Muslim Cultural Centre” was only two minutes walking distance from “Rose Café”. So, it was a double benefit for me to visit this restaurant as I could be able to say my prayer besides taking my meal! Moreover, in “Kyoto Cultural Centre” there is a Halal food shop where many of the Halal snacks, chocolates and drinks are sold. So, I had to return to that place time and again. I think any Muslim people should feel comfortable to find a Halal restaurant, A Mosque and a Halal Food Shop in a same place in a city like Kyoto in Japan. I think any Muslim people visiting Kyoto, should visit this place in order to getting served their multiple purposes of religious customs along with taking “Halal” food. That is why I would like to name the break in Rose café as “Islamic Break” as it is reflected in the title of this article.

Next question: I have got an enough space for praying in my dormitory room (hooray!), but will I disturb the other guest when I am praying? As a Muslim, we have to pray five times a day. You would not have a problem to do Dzuhur (midday), Ashar (afternoon), and Maghrib (twilight) pray, because many of hostel guests are going outside at that time so you can have a pray peacefully in your room. But how about Isha and Subuh (morning) pray? There are a lot of people in my room, will I disturb them? My advice: Just go and pray. It is a hostel dormitory. Everybody has a same right to use the space in your room as long as you do not break the rules (inviting outsiders to your room or making a noise). If you are confused, you can ask your roommate’s permission whether you disturb them or not to pray in room space. Note for Subuh pray: Please make sure to put your alarm near from your bed, so your morning alarm for Subuh pray would not disturb other guests.

Nowadays, some hostels in Japan declare their hostel as Muslim friendly hostel, such as Khaosan Hostel. Honestly, I never asked for Muslim facility during my stay in Khaosan Hostel (I have been staying in Khaosan World Hostel Asakusa and Khaosan Kyoto Guesthouse) as I always got enough space to pray in my room. However, you can ask the receptionist if you need that kind of facilities.
Happy traveling!

PASEO

As the growing number of Muslim students in the campus, Mie University is now preparing to serve halal menu in PASEO, a campus restaurant which is part of university co-op. Answering the high demand of halal food from Muslim students, the university will provide a halal lunch menu every Wednesday of the week start from April 15th, 2015. The menu will be varied every week. A declaration to start serving halal menu in the campus was announced on March 24th , 2015, and attended by Muslim Student Association of Mie University and representative lecturers from Padjadjaran University and Sriwijaya University, Indonesia. In this event, Muslim students coming from Indonesia, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh were enjoying the food tasting of the Japanese food made by PASEO with halal ingredients, such as sukiyaki, sushi, and tempura. Not only the meat, but the seasoning including shoyu and vinegar are also in halal label. The cookware in the kitchen is separated between the cookware for halal and non-halal food. As a limited halal washoku (Japanese food) around campus, this activity garnered positive responses from the students. The leader of Muslim Students Association of Mie University, Candra Wirawan, stated that this good intention from university will be a bridge between Mie University and Muslim students of Mie University. “We hope that this good start will create a good relationship between Muslim student community and Japanese people,” he said. Most of the Muslim students interviewed in this event also hoped that the weekly halal menu will lead for provision of halal corner in university’s canteen for the next step.

Prayer Room
Since 2013, the prayer room for Muslim students is already provided by Mie University on the fourth floor of the Bioresources Faculty building. This room is initiated by The Indonesian Student Association and has been approved by the university. The room is renewed on February 2015 and equipped with warm carpet and prayer mats.
Mie University is now having Muslim students from Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and France. The facilities for Muslim is provided to support the Muslim students during their study in Mie.

Ama means traditional Japanese woman diver, one of the oldest profession for Japanese women who already existed since 3,000 years ago. This profession also filmed in Amachan TV series starring Rena Nonen. Today, half of Japanese Ama-san are still living in Osatsu, part of Toba which also located in Ise Shima National Park. In their daily life, the Ama only uses a traditional equipment for catching shells and other seafood. They also have a unique breathing technique called isobue which makes them able to swim without diving tank.
In the last few years, Ama culture become one of the main attractions for tourist in Toba. If you want to meet the real Ama-san and have a chat with them, you can take a tour organized by Hachimankamado, a tour operator owned by local residents. On this tour, you will visit Ama hut and have fresh seafood grilled by the Ama-san in front of you. For Muslim tourist, the meals were made with non-alcohol homemade miso and shoyu sauce. While enjoying the appetizing seafood, the Ama-san will tell you the history of Ama-san and their experience doing this traditional fishery. At the end of the tour, don’t forget to try cosplaying Ama costume and strike a pose in front of the hut!
Hachimankamado provides prayer rooms for Muslim in their Ama hut. The room for male and female are separated. It is equipped with prayer mat, qibla sign, air conditioner, and sandals for wudu (ablution).
Access: From Nagoya, take Kintetsu Line or JR Line to Toba Station. In Toba station, take Mie Kotsu Bus to Osatsu Bus stop (35 minutes drive).
